Master Thesis - Method development for quality control of MEA sub-gasket
PowerCell is a fast-moving company, and we have fun doing what we do. Come join us!
At PowerCell Group, we are decarbonizing industries. We design, develop and manufacture hydrogen electric fuel cells and systems for aviation, propulsion, stationary, and marine applications. Our fuel cell systems have unparalleled power density, and the only emissions are water and heat. At our headquarters, located in Gothenburg, more than 150 employees work hard to deliver zero-emission solutions to customers around the world. We are growing fast and are always looking for new colleagues to add to our innovative, friendly, and ambitious culture.
Background:
Hydrogen fuel cells consist of different parts. Membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is where oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation reactions take place. One of the components of MEA is the sub-gasket material, which prevents leakage of hydrogen and oxygen. Once hydrogen leakage is taken place during fuel cell operation, not only performance is affected in a negative way, but also it increases safety risks due to its flammable characteristic. Therefore, properties of the sub gaskets have a high impact on the performance and safety.
In this project, literature studies will be combined with laboratory work to investigate efficient and reliable sub-gasket quality check methods.
Main tasks:
- Literature study about properties of sub gaskets.
- Method development for quality control of the sub gaskets. Including testing different sub-gasket materials by creepage tool for measuring the thickness retention of the sub-gaskets.
- Contamination testing for different sub-gasket materials by Ion Chromatography.
- Evaluation and rating sub-gasket samples after testing.
Requirements:
- We are looking for a master student with a chemical engineering or materials chemistry background.
- Lab work experience.
- Fluent in English, both oral and written.
Thesis duration: Mid-January 2025 – Mid-June 2025
30 credits master thesis topic.
