Master Thesis: Two-Phase CFD Modeling of Flow Plates in PEM Fuel Cells
PowerCell is a fast-moving company, and we have fun doing what we do. Come join us!
At PowerCell Group, we are decarbonizing industries. We design, develop and manufacture hydrogen electric fuel cells and systems for aviation, propulsion, stationary, and marine applications. Our fuel cell systems have unparalleled power density, and the only emissions are water and heat. At our headquarters, located in Gothenburg, more than 150 employees work hard to deliver zero-emission solutions to customers around the world. We are growing fast and are always looking for new colleagues to add to our innovative, friendly, and ambitious culture.
We are looking for a master student in the Engineering team!
Thesis topic:
The proposed master thesis project focuses on the development of a two-phase (gas/liquid) CFD model of the flow within the flow plates of our PEM fuel cell stacks. The aim is to improve the estimation of how the presence of liquid water in the gas stream affects the flow behavior, and in particular the pressure drop, within the flow plates.
Project goals and expected outcomes:
- Investigate multiphase models and their applicability on flow plate simulations.
- Investigate literature and test data to estimate water balance.
- Implement promising solutions and assess the effectiveness of the models by comparing with data from in-situ tests.
- Give suggestions on methodology for CFD during the design phase.
The goals and expected outcomes can be discussed and adjusted in collaboration with the master students.
Assignment:
- Conduct a literature review on multiphase flow in fuel cells.
- Assess and possibly improve current modelling methodology regarding water management.
- Validate and refine the models using real-world data.
Desired skills:
- Strong background in fluid mechanics and dynamics.
- Experience with CFD software, preferably ANSYS Fluent.
- Experience with ANSA is helpful.
- Knowledge of fuel cell technology, specifically PEM fuel cells, is a plus.
Supervision and support:
The student will receive support from PowerCell’s engineering team, with regular check-ins to provide guidance on both technical and industry-specific aspects.
We offer you the opportunity to join the journey with us to deliver true zero emission to our customers, partners, and the world. You will work with highly skilled and devoted people; cutting-edge tech and you will be able to have an impact on the work and on the organization. PowerCell is a fast-moving company, fast growing and we have fun doing what we do. Come join us!
